First I would like to tell you that it is not hard to do. You do not have to have a college degree nor do you need any knowledge of programming. The only thing you will have to do to start making money online by making a website is have an open mind and be willing to learn.

I began my first website about one year ago. I had no knowledge of html, marketing, advertising or the tools needed to begin. What I did have was an Internet connection providing me with a wealth of information. I began my journey by finding out how to actually get a domain. I learned that you must find a host first. Think of an Internet host as a company that publishes your site to the net. A few good hosts are 1and1 and hostgator. Go to the host you decide and it is pretty self-explanatory. The host will walk you through the steps.

Once I had my domain registered I had to find out how to make the website so that I could start to make money online. I soon learned that the easiest and most effective way to make a website is to use a program like dream weaver or front page. I decided to use dream weaver. I went to the site and purchased the program. It took me a few days to figure out the basics but with the help of search engines I found some great articles and tutorials on how to do it.

I had my website and I began to build content. Now it was time to figure out how to make money online with my website. I went to google and registered a google ad sense account through the advertising link on their front page. I placed the google ads on my site and followed these basic rules religiously for about 6 months:

Content - The more content the better. When the major search engines send out their robots they love to see fresh content. I updated my website very frequently. I wrote articles and provided good information then I post the content on the site. When the robots came back they noticed there was fresh new content and that boosted my sites rankings toward the top. This was a great contributor to my website making money online.

Links - When the search engine robots crawl the web they also notice links. The more links that they find pointing to your site, the better. I began contacting other Webmaster with sites similar to mine. I sent them messages requesting a link exchange. Many of these webmasters were happy to do a link exchange with me. I placed their link in my links page and they place mine in their links page. The search engines started finding all kinds of links pointing to my site combined with the fresh content and my site climbed even higher in the search rankings. Now I was really starting to make money online.

Articles - I wrote an article related to my site every three days. I took this new article and posted it on my site. I then posted the article to as many article directories as possible. The articles in the directories provided a one-way link to my site but most importantly they were made available to other webmasters to post on their site. When another Webmaster posted my article on their site they had to place a link to my site along with it. Articles provide links to your site and content so it is a winning situation. Articles are, in my opinion, the number one way to make money online after you make a website.

I followed these basics principles and still do today. In the recent month I have quite my day job. I am now living very comfortable doing something I had no idea how to do one year ago. Making money online is not as hard as you think. Following these basic guidelines and you can make a website and start your very own home business today.

3. Avoid misspellings. What professional do you know who would purposefully misspell? It not only looks unprofessional, it looks like you don't care enough about your business to ensure that these types of mistakes didn't happen.

4. Make your page easy to read. This means you'll need compelling titles and easy to read content in order to get them interested in reading what you have to say.

7: List With The Important Directories

Search engines are automated computer programs that scan, index, and determine your relevancy ranking thru a complex math equation. Directories, on the other hand, are completely run by humans.

Listing with the major directories will get you a much better search engine placement because the search engines give your site extra "weight" if a major directory links to your fitness website.

Once you've listed with the big ones (like DMOZ and Yahoo!) be sure to check out the secondary directories for an even more improved search engine ranking.


8: Don't Waste Your Time On Developing Link Exchanges

There's a lot of talk nowadays about building link popularity and exchanging links with other sites to get improved search engine ranking for your fitness website.

Just avoid trading links with every fitness website you run across. More often than not it will actually hurt you rather than help.

You simply enter in your keyword (I noticed you cant use more than 2 words) and it will give you a list similar to what you would see in Wordtracker. You can choose to have your keywords shown through a Wordtracker database, Overture database, thesauras, lateral or with a keyword analysis.

It is pretty extensive and I highly recommend that you check it out. It gives you five statistics for the keyword you type in.

1.) Phrase - Exact keyword phrase people are using to search the search engines.

2.) Count - Number of times search phrase was used in the past 60-days.

3.) Pages - Number of pages listed in Google with any or all of the keyword phrase.

4.) Competition - Number of pages listed in Google with the exact keyword phrase.

5.) Ratio - Number of sites for every 1 search; the closer to zero, the less competition.

Wanna know your Google ranking without having to buy expensive software? Nichebot also has a way that you can check you ranking.

Let's say you are in a hypothetical situation. You have $1000 to spend on your Internet business to build it up from scratch. Where do you begin?

A disclaimer before we begin: This is how I would do it. It might not apply to your situation and it might not even work for you. But this is what I would do and it is what I'm doing right now.

Here's my plan: I would spend the $100 to get 300 fresh, original articles written for about $3 each. That will generate traffic for years to come.

I will then purchase an autoresponder membership with either Aweber or Get Response. Those two are the best in the business. This will allow me to build a follow-up system via email marketing.

Let's face it: we write articles for directories to get traffic. And traffic equals a thriving business if you have a good system built in. That system can be an email follow-up system, and it's one of the most profitable systems around.

Having the email address of your potential customer is worth gold. If they subscribe to your list, it gives you the permission to follow-up with them with relevant information and related offers of your own products or for affiliate products.

So that's how I would spend my money. Spending money on articles is definitely worth it, if you submit them consistently, have fresh articles out there all the time, and have a good follow-up system to follow-up with your visitors. This is the proven system I use day in and day out, and it has reaped dividends for me.

Marketing Is Buying Customers

Marketing your Jewelery business is nothing more than buying customers.

That's all it is, and the sooner you understand that, the more comfortable you'll be investing money in everything from advertising to sales training and from PR to Customer Relationship Management tools.

When you think about it, anything and everything you do to bring in a new customer, or to get an existing one to do business with you again is marketing. And everything you do to accomplish either of those goals has a cost associated with it.

Run an ad in the local paper or top industry magazine... it costs money.

Some businesses hire a salesman and put him on the street. Even if he's a straight commission guy and you don't pay him until after the sale is made, you still have the cost of recruiting and training. And while you don't pay a salary up-front, in this case, you still pay that commission out of every sale he makes.

PR... that's FREE advertising, right? Don't tell that to the companies who pay public relations companies or internal PR specialists to get that press coverage. Even if you do it entirely yourself, you have to invest time, and we all know, time is money.

No Marketing is Free

No, there is no free lunch in the marketing world. You want new customers or the old ones to come back, it's going to cost you.

You can't avoid this fact, but you can quantify it. You can know how much it costs you to bring in a new customer and how much it takes to get your existing ones coming back.

And while most companies can't tell you what the specific numbers are for these two costs of acquisition, anybody with half a brain can see they should.

How else can you make intelligent, informed, wise decisions about marketing your business?

What was your advertising budget last year? What percentage of it was dedicated to bringing in new prospects, customers, clients or patients? How many did you actually bring in?

The Formula

If you spent $100,000.00 on advertising last year, but $30,000.00 of that was on programs designed to get existing customers to come back again, your new customer acquisition budget for the year was $70,000.00. If you brought in 1,000 new customers with that budget, each one of those new customers cost you $70.00.

Whether that's good or bad is relative. It depends on what your average ticket is and what your margins are, and how often and how many times a typical customer comes back to buy again. But the important thing is, you now know something critical to help you make marketing investment decisions in the future.

If you run an ad campaign that brings customers in at $83.27 each, you know that isn't an effective campaign. It may have been a weak offer, or it may have been delivered to the wrong audience. It may have been a sub-par headline, or you may not have bought your media right. But you know you've got a problem if you didn't at least match your average cost of acquisition point and you can look to make changes to improve results.

On the other hand, a campaign that yields customers at $64.23 a piece is a success. You spent less than normal to bring them in. It's a keeper and should probably be tried again, assuming everything else is equal, like average ticket and pre-disposition of these new customers to return for future purchases at the typical rate.

Power of Testing and Tracking

Tracking these numbers also empowers your negotiating position with the media.
"Look Bob, I know you've got a rate card, but the truth is, your station is costing me $97.30 a customer, while KBS across town is bringing them in at $68.20. If you want me to keep doing business with me, you're going to have to get me a price that generates new customers at nor more than my $70.00 average."

Now Bob can work with you on price, or he can not. If he does, your cost of acquisition prices remain in line. If not, you can walk away from doing business with Bob's station and never lose a wink of sleep. He was just too expensive for what you get. Move that marketing investment to a place that hits your numbers.

Of course to figure any of this out, you've got to be tracking your results on a regular basis. That means making specific offers and a specific call to action in your marketing efforts. You ask people to come in, mention a specific ad, bring in a coupon, call a specific number or extension, or mention a specific code.

Example

We have a client who is testing local radio. He is looking at three different radio stations. After one week he has gotten responses from only one of the stations. How does he know? Because he made different offers on each station.

Next he'll switch the ads so the offer #1, which ran on station "A", now runs on station "B." Offer #2, which was on station "B" will now be on station "C", and the offer on station "C" now goes to station "A."

If the responses still come from the same station, our client will know it's the station that is accounting for the response and he can spend more money there, and less or none with the "loser" stations. If the responses follow the offer, he'll know he has found a winning offer and he can replace the loser offers, and keep using all three stations.

Of course, the number of spots running on each station are the same, as are the dayparts in which the commercials are running, so he's trying to eliminate variables other than station and offer. This is something of a simplification of the process, you get the idea.

Bottom Line

The point is, you want to keep close tabs on what it's costing you to bring in a new customer in your Jewelery business. Naturally, the goal is to "buy" them for as little as possible, and then ethically get as much out of them as you can, in servicing them over time.

Not too different from stocks... buy low, sell high. Only when it comes to buying customers, you can have a lot more control over the market.
