Every day the internet mushrooms by millions upon millions more article web pages, this one being no exception, than the day before. Articles of every kind, type, length and language pepper the World Wide Web with a variety of expert topics aimed at informing, educating and assisting web surfers in our journey around the never-ending network of connectivity that we know as the web. With all this incredible writing activity and information sharing, at times I have to stand back and wonder, are all these articles truly helpful or are they just creating more confusion?

As some background information, I subscribe to a popular newsletter service that publishes an outstanding newsletter on interesting topics such as web design, marketing and e-commerce news. Everyday my in box has an article from this service, which I am more than happy to open in order to discover what wise wisdom they and their writers hope to impart on that day. At times, when there is a truly exceptional article on a topic that I know I can benefit from I will print it out for further study in hopes that it can help me. So needless to say I have a stack of them in a folder. Let me share a few of them with you and then we can talk about the question I posed in the title to this article.

In December 2005 an article was written focused on using keywords in web pages, then in January 2006 an article on link popularity, in February 2006 an article on HTML code optimization, in March 2006 an article on using RSS feeds to enhance your web pages then in April 2006 an article dedicated to the proper way to use meta tags.

By themselves, the titles of these five articles seem informative and valuable, but how many thousands of articles were written in December 2005 on using the proper keywords in your web pages, or in March 2006 on the value of integrating RSS feeds into your website? Hard to say, but as you can imagine it probably has many zeros behind that number.

So, as a home-based business owner who is running a website, how do you decipher through all the junk to find the little treasure that lies in a few of these articles. For me, I initially searched and subscribed to a number of expert sites until I found one that I felt provided fresh article content with just a little sales from time to time. I do not mind the sales pitches as long as there is some good article content to follow.

The key here is to stay focused on the topic that you are interested in. As an example, I was interested in learning more about affiliate programs and so recently, I subscribed to an affiliate tip newsletter. The newsletter is short, to the point, provides links for more information if I desire and does not arrive everyday.

If I were to provide some advice, it would be to subscribe to about ten newsletters, segmented by category then over the course of a few weeks begin to filter out and unsubscribe out of the newsletters that you feel are just not worthwhile.

That concludes this article; I wanted to keep it reasonably short. I am positive that we could have continued discussing the finer points of article content but we should each take a little from each article and learn a little on our own to be successful. Here is where it can get real exciting, lets suppose that those websites that are publishing your articles are well ranked themselves in the search engines. We know that well ranked sites will enjoy a steady flow of visitors so your article is now being seen by human eyes that may want to click on your links to get more information from you.

This would be what is called direct referrals and in this case the link's text and format does not really matter. The visitor will simply click on the link and be taken to your site.

Now, when referring to the link's text and format what exactly am I talking about? I referring to what is called the anchor text. Without going into an in depth Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) lesson, let's just think of anchor text as being the actual text that you click--in other words it is the text that makes up the link.

Why is the actual text that we click in the link important? Remember when we talked about the human visitors to all the websites that have our article? We failed to mention the other "visitors" that will be frequenting those sites...Yes, that is right, the search engine spiders will be visiting those sites as well.

Their mission of course will be to gather and index all your article's content-to include your author resource links. If everything is formatted corrected, then these spiders will follow your links back to your website.

Unlike humans, the search engine spiders do care what text is used to make up the link. This is the concept that will allow you to optimize your website. How is this done? let's take a look at the examples below.

Example link format 1:

http://www.ezinearticles.com/ ---This is how you will see most links formatted here. This is just the website's address and by default the EzineArticles website automatically adds the necessary code to display this as a link ( This is done behind the scenes and you do not have to do anything to get the link built.)

Example link format 2: Article Submissions

Run your mouse over the link above and you will see that it still points to the same website, but there is one very important difference here--the link text--in this case the words "Article Submissions" are now pointing to the website.

Basically what I have done is to use the keyword phrase "Article Submissions" as the anchor text for the link. Search engines will treat anchor text as being more important or more relevant within the site, and if you manage to get your article published on a well ranked site, then you will see a boost in your ranking for the keywords you have chose to use in the link text.

As you can see, choosing the right link text for your site can add a considerable boost to your search engine rankings. Always remember that anytime you are placing a link to your site anywhere and you have the option to use relevant keywords in the link text then be sure you do so.

The more that you try to shoot for a C grade, the more it will actually be an A grade article. Just keep practicing and don't write rough drafts or brainstorms. Doing that will just increase your article writing time. In the time that you write a rough draft and a brain storm, you can already have more than five articles waiting to be submitted!

• Time yourself everyday. Write everyday and put in a new time goal. Make it shorter every time, and try to get your articles in before the certain time limit. Don't stop until you get it. This will help your articles content and it will help decrees your article writing time.

Using the right article submission sites can make the difference between success and failure of your business. Particularly if you are like me and use article marketing for the bulk of your marketing efforts. In this case, it is probably the single most important factor in achieving success.

Using my website stat counter, I check my article statistics on a regular basis. I want to know which article submission sites are sending me traffic and which ones are not. After I add a new directory to my list, I check my statistics very thoroughly. If the new site is not sending me traffic after a month, I delete them from my list.

This is extremely important. Early in my article marketing career, I did not check my statistics. And, in a number of cases, I got little or no traffic from many of these sites. However, because I was not aware, I continued to submit to these non-performing article submission sites.

I was very fortunate that I began to check my stats when I did. Initially, I submitted to 150 article submission sites on a daily basis. As you can imagine, it was very time consuming, even though I was using submission software. After I began to check my statistics, I was able to delete 90 article submission sites from my daily list with no loss of business.

90 sites are an awful lot. What about the people who submitted to just 40 or 50 of those non-performing sites and no others? I suppose that those are the people who say that article marketing does not work. To ensure the success of your Internet business, make sure that you regularly check your site statistics. Make sure that you are getting traffic from your each of your article submission sites.
