Viral marketing is a methods of list building
You can be the best web designer in the world and have fancy pictures and objects pasted all over your website, but if it is not optimized for keywords that will bring you targeted traffic, you are probably wasting your time, this goes for organic search results as well as pay per click such as Google AdWords.
So how do you find out what keywords you need to focus on? Well first off, you need to do some research that will take a little time. Do a search for software on Google called "Good Keywords". It is a free software tool that has many benefits allowing you to collect information based on keyword searches. For more advanced options and to get thousands of results, I would recommend using software like Keywords Analyzer or Keyword Elite. Both of these research software tools offer many advanced and detailed features that will allow you to find long tail words with little competition but gets many searches.
There are also many online keyword research services you can use, some are free also. These include Google, Overture, Digital Point and many others. Of course, you can always upgrade to the paid version with many online services and have access to many additional features.
To get ranked well on Google, you must have other websites linking to yours, the more you have, the higher you will rank. This shows Google that your website is of importance. The most important factor is the website that is linking to yours must include a keyword that you are wanting to get ranked for in the link text, this is called the anchor text. For instance, if you are wanting to get ranked for the word "dog training", then the website that links to your site needs to include this text within the link itself.
Keyword research software such as Keywords Analyzer will show you how many competitors you have for thousands of keywords. The key is to find words that gets many searches with very little competition. This way, you can get ranked fast within the search engines.
